Lying in the East Coast of Fife only 7 miles from St Andrews it dates from the 18th century to early 19th century and is classed as an ‘example of a picturesque, model estate’. Steeped in history and part of the Erksine family for over 300 years it is a fascinating place to come and explore if you love gardening. It also has fun walks, a visitor centre and for the kids a nature play area. Furthermore, there is a heritage exhibition, shop and cafe.

The gardens

Of course, the name Cambo Gardens means there are gardens galore to explore! And there is plenty to explore with people saying it is one of the best gardens they have visited, with stunning planting and one of the best places to unwind. Here you can visit the 2.5-acre Georgian walled garden which dates back to the 1800’s. A waterfall, willows, iron bridges and a summer house create a stunning atmosphere in this beautifully planted garden which houses rare plants. With the winter gardens and prairie garden and their naturalistic planting, there is always something to see. In snowdrop season you can indulge in the spectacular display of over 30 varieties of snowdrops. Followed later by an explosion of colour when bulbs blossom and Spring arrives. Then the summer brings with it many delights including a historic rose collection, stunning herbaceous borders and bursts of colour all around.

Walks

Within Cambo Estate there is a 70-acre woodland. Here you will find an array of paths winding through it providing a home for a wealth of wildlife and ecosystems. Linking with the Fife coastal path it also takes in a 2-mile sea border. The paths are open for all to enjoy and there is a disabled access badger trial to explore. Maps are available from the tack room to help you navigate this magical wonderland. Additionally, from the 27th of January to the 12th of March the Scottish Snowdrop Festival runs. Here you can enjoy the winter garden and all the unique snowdrops on show in the Snowdrop walks. The woodland comes to life with blankets of snowdrops swathing the woodland floor. Cambo Gardens is famous for its collection of snowdrops and it can be a good idea to book tickets on their What’s On page to secure a specific day to visit.

Shop, exhibition and cafe

The Tack Room Shop houses work by local craftspeople. Here gifts including eco-friendly products, homeware, jewellery, ceramics and garden tools can be purchased. And of course, you can purchase unique plants, seasonal produce, cut flowers and more. If you want to know more about Cambo Estates history you can visit the heritage exhibition in the Georgian Stables. With old Victorian photographs, interactive map and letters to the Erskine family you can immerse yourself in its past. Then after all this fun, you can enjoy some refreshments in Cambo Gardens cafe. With a changing menu offering vegetarian and vegan delights, you can choose an indoor or outdoor setting to refuel. What’s more can bring your beloved dog and spoil them with treats!

Nature play for the kids

The kids will have oodles of fun here with a wealth of outdoor spaces to explore. Tapping into their creativity they can enjoy the Lost Elf Villages with its bug hotels, dens, huts and tree platforms. Using natural paraphernalia such as cones, bamboo, shells and bark they can lose themselves in their imagination through imaginative play. Furthermore, there is the Glingbobs and Tootflits trail. These elusive creatures have doors and windows in the trees and may even have been spotted in the Cambo Den. Keep those eyes peeled and be sure to leave a drawing at Cambo Gardens if you see them.
